Signs of a Slab Leak
A slab leak is a pinhole leak developed in one or more of your home’s water lines that run under the foundation. Here are a few tell-tale signs of a slab leak:
- Spike in utility bills. If you’ve noticed a sharp increase in your home’s water bills, you likely have a leaking pipe.
- Soggy lawn or wet planters near your house
- Waterlogged carpets and wet baseboards
- Leaking or moisture from under the water heater but the stand is dry
- Warm areas on the floor
What Causes a Slab Leak
There are many factors that contribute to a slab leak, however in our experience, we find the most common cause is corrosion of pipes. Copper pipes in particular get rusty over the years with constant contact with water. Chemicals found in soil can also create a chemical reaction with pipes and cause corrosion. Hot water lines typically corrode on the exterior from reaction to the soil; cold water lines usually corrode from the interior from a combination of water contact and electrolysis.
Other factors include leaks from vibrations and abrasions. As water moves through the pipes, natural vibrations from expansion and contraction occur. This causes the pipes to rub against hard surfaces such as concrete or gravel. Over time, leaks develop especially in weak joints.
Ground shifting and settling from nearby construction can also cause pipes to bend or crease which affects the flow of water and the pressure. Leaks often develop from the uneven pressure within the pipe. Severe shifting can cause burst pipes leading to massive water damage.
How We Can Fix a Slab Leak
Our knowledgeable plumbers will first do an inspection of the leak to pinpoint its location. Then depending on the severity and location, we’ll recommend a remedy that is as non-invasive as possible and best suits your needs. We are experts in epoxy restoration (drilling two holes for non-intrusive repair), and repiping.
