A broken sewer line is a homeowner’s nightmare. Traditionally, pipe excavation services were used to dig up the broken pipe and repair or replace it. This costly method damaged landscaping and sometimes required driveways and sidewalks to be removed. Excavation can take several days or weeks. Luckily there now is trenchless sewer line repair and replacement, a quicker, less invasive method of fixing broken sewer lines.
All Types Plumbing, Drain & Rooter Service has been helping customers in Tooele, UT fix their sewer lines for more than 22 years.
Common Causes of Broken Sewer Lines
Underground sewer lines are vulnerable to a number of natural events that can cause damage such as:
Tree roots: Trees are lovely to look at above ground, but difficult to manage underground. Tree roots are the most common cause of broken or burst sewer lines. Through everyday use, sewer lines heat up and become warmer than the surrounding soil. This causes condensation to form on the pipes. Tree roots gravitate towards this moisture and eventually puncture a pipe, typically at a weakened joint, causing blockages or bursting.
Vibrations or settling of the earth: Nearby construction work can cause the ground to vibrate and crush pipes. Sometimes the ground beneath a house naturally settles and shifts which can also cause damage.
Too much debris: Naturally-occurring household debris such as hair and toilet paper (and some not-so-natural debris such as children’s toys) make their way down the sewer lines. If a major blockage occurs, the pressure can cause an old pipe to break.
Corrosion: Pipes found in older homes (those built before 1970) are more prone to corrosion and need to be replaced.
How Trenchless Repair Works
All Types Plumbing, Drain & Rooter Service uses two types of trenchless sewer repair methods: pipe lining and pipe bursting.
Pipe lining involves drilling a small hole into the pipe and inserting a unique mixture of epoxy and resin to essentially form a new pipe within the older one. The mixture is held in place until it hardens and is ready for use — this takes just a few hours.
Pipe bursting requires drilling two small holes, one on either end of the damaged pipe. A new pipe is inserted in one end and pulled through with hydraulic machinery which ‘bursts’ the older pipe.
Both methods can be completed within 24 hours and require no damage to your yard or landscaping. The new pipes installed conform to industry standards and are more resistant to tree roots and corrosion.
