When your toilet is backed-up and making a mess, a plunger can be your knight in shining armor. The best type of plunger to unclog a toilet (yes, there are different types of plungers), is a flange type. A flange plunger looks like a regular cup plunger, but has an extended lip to better plug the cavity in the toilet bowl. If you don’t have a flange type, no worries — a cup plunger should work too.
Chances are you discovered your toilet was plugged after you flushed. This means your toilet may be close to the brim with water, or possibly overflowing. Wait a few minutes to see whether the water level goes down. If it doesn’t drain at all, or if there is too much water, scoop some out with a bucket to avoid splashing. Leave just enough water to cover the plunger cup about halfway.
- Position the plunger so that it is perpendicular to the toilet for best results.
- Press the plunger down to create a seal over the toilet bowl cavity and push out excess air.
- Begin by gently pumping the plunger up and down a few times, and then apply stronger pumps. Alternate between a few reps of gentle and strong heaves.
Hopefully this helps unclog the toilet! The most common cause of severely clogged toilets is small children’s toys. The best prevention is to keep the bathroom door and toilet lid down when not being used and educate little ones about not flushing anything down besides toilet paper.
Beware of Snakes and Chemical Solutions
If a plunger fails, a plumbing snake might work, but beware as many inexperienced DIYers have accidentally caused damage to their pipes this way. There are many different types of snakes, both manual and motorized with varying degrees of power. Selecting the proper one to use can be challenging. A snake can scratch the insides of your pipe, or worse, cause a crack if the pipe is already old or weakened.
Most chemical solutions contain harsh ingredients that actually damage the interior of pipes over time. It’s best to avoid using these.
